Cynical about life, serious about vegetables.

Where have all the ladybugs gone?

The last two days have been really busy. My wife and I spent many hours at the garden centre. Trips like this are always a special experience for us. I get lost among the flowers, while my better half sneaks around the veggie seedlings that are already up for sale.

This time, she picked lettuce and parsley seedlings, which went straight into one of our little greenhouses. Fingers crossed they’ll grow nicely! As for me, completely absorbed by the flower section, I was stuck with the eternal floral dilemma. And there were flowers galore. By the way, I love that phrase — “bez liku” (galore). It’s opposite in Polish is “pod likiem” (not so many), but what exactly is this mysterious “lik”? To this day, I don’t know! And judging by the way my wife rolls her eyes every time I ask, I suspect this question will remain unanswered for a while.

But let’s get back to my garden.

In the end, unable to decide, I bought 10 pansy plants and 2 primroses — both in sunny yellow. I hope these beauties will soon attract some ladybugs. Once in my life I saw one in my garden, so statistically speaking, I’m well on my way to having a whole colony!

On top of that, I couldn’t resist a pale-pink boronia. Maybe it didn’t look spectacular, but the fragrance was so heavenly, I just had to have it. There was no other choice!

The last additions to my basket were two huge bushes of bright marguerites and one little pink daisy — just for contrast!

Life in the garden is a constant battle — with the weather, with pests, and sometimes with my own overly ambitious gardening plans. But if all goes well, soon my little patch of green will be even more beautiful. And maybe, if I’m lucky, more than one ladybug will flutter in to visit!
