Cynical about life, serious about vegetables.

What’s happening in the tiny vegetable garden?

Is autumn coming soon? Let me be honest — autumn is already here, and it didn’t ask for permission. It showed up with a bag full of heavy rain and a supply of wind that seems to personally dislike me.

So, what’s going on in the little garden? Most of the crops have been harvested. The yield? Let’s call it modest — which is a polite way of saying: not great, but still something. And you know what? I’m proud of it. In this microscopic garden, every tomato is a treasure, and every carrot — a miracle.

Of course, not everything went smoothly. I still can’t grow parsley. It’s my horticultural Achilles’ heel. Every time I think — Grzegorz, this time you’ve cracked the code, you’ve understood the magic — the parsley decides to wither in contempt. A solid lesson in humility.

I’m not the only one celebrating these modest harvests. My feathered entourage — tits, sparrows, and those shy pigeons — are delighted too. I’m eagerly waiting to see if the robin, my winter guest, will show up this year. Mice also try to join the party, but that’s what my traps are for. Sadly, sometimes a shrew sneaks in. C’est la vie, nature’s way.

I dream that one day a little frog will come visit me. A friendly, small one. But in my peaceful village, that dream won’t come true on its own. Maybe I should dig a pond? My wife would probably give me that look that says — Grzegorz, don’t even start!

Plans for autumn? Mostly wandering around the garden with a pitchfork and a shovel. I’ve got a pile of compost to spread, and I want to swap a few pots for two proper raised beds. That’s my way of dealing with autumn nostalgia.

I admit, sometimes I dream of a bigger garden. One where I could meet skunks, opossums, or raccoons. That’s a joke. Probably. But there’s something oddly appealing about it, isn’t there?

And speaking of dreams and mild madness — October is just around the corner, and with it, Halloween! Many people complain it’s become commercial. And they’re right. But does that mean we can’t enjoy it? Every holiday is commercial these days, but it’s us who give it meaning.

As I wrote last year, I love the Halloween vibe — especially the music that creates that unmistakable atmosphere. So today I’m sharing a fresh batch, perfect for autumn walks or staring out the window at the rain.
