Hello, my faithful readers! After the winter phase and the first March seedlings, the garden is finally entering its spring stage! That means more plants, and the seeds are already sprouting! I’ve got a whole bunch of photos and plenty of updates for you today — so let’s get started!
As you may remember, four weeks ago I sowed spinach, carrots, and parsley. I always grow parsley in 30-liter pots, and I have to say — it’s doing great. Last year I had trouble with spinach because it refused to grow in containers, so this time it went into the greenhouse tunnel. Different soil, different microclimate — fingers crossed it works!
At the beginning of March, I also bought seedlings of garlic, beets, Swiss chard, leeks, iceberg lettuce, leaf parsley, and some herbs. They’re all growing like crazy now! The herbs in the greenhouse are thriving — they’re practically ready to escape their pots!
The iceberg lettuce looks so good that we’ve already started picking the outer leaves for salads. That’s one of its best features — it keeps producing new leaves all season long, right until autumn, so you can enjoy it non-stop!
The beets and Swiss chard in the tunnel are growing like mad. It’ll take a while before the roots develop, but we’ll be able to use the leaves soon!
The garlic went into the beds next to the strawberries and tomatoes. Yes — I already have tomatoes, but more on that in a moment! The garlic will definitely come in handy once it forms cloves, but its main purpose is to support those strawberries and tomatoes. Apparently, it even improves their flavor. I’ll also be adding basil later — though it’s still too cold for it now.
The leaf parsley went into small 2.5-liter pots and is doing great! I really recommend growing herbs and veggies in containers — it’s such a fantastic way to garden.
The leeks are growing very slowly, unfortunately, due to the limited sunlight. The sun’s still too low on the horizon, so I’m keeping them in the tunnel where it’s warmer. I’m waiting for sunnier days — together with them.
Now for some news — what’s new in the little garden! As I mentioned earlier — tomatoes! Every year I plant five small seedlings along the fence. Sadly, it casts quite a bit of shade, but they still grow wonderfully. Just need to wait for warmer days.
I also have three new pepper seedlings, and since they need lots of sunlight, I planted them in 30-liter pots. It’s my first time growing peppers in containers, and I really hope it works out. It has to!
Then there’s a tiny lavender tree — it only grows to about half a meter tall, so it’s really small. I have no idea what I’ll use it for, but it was so pretty I just had to buy it!
Next up — three zucchini plants. It’s my first time growing zucchini, and I have no idea how much space they need, so each one got its own 60-liter pot. Maybe that’s overkill — we’ll see how big they get.
The onions I planted at the beginning of March have sprouted beautifully. I’ve now got a whole little onion field!
So, what’s next for the garden? I’ve added a second raised bed next to the onions and one big new pot. I’m planning to plant cucumbers there! I wasn’t going to this year but, well, you know how it goes — I couldn’t resist.
I’m also planning to grow green beans. The first batch didn’t sprout — I think it was too cold. I’ll give them another try, but honestly, I’m not too hopeful. So I’ll make some extra seedlings just in case.
Another thing on my list — hot chili peppers! At least four plants. But I’ll have to wait until May for those.
And that’s all for now from my little city garden! As the days get warmer, I’ll keep sharing my progress with you. I’ve also got a few other post ideas brewing, so expect more updates soon.
See you next time!
