An interesting part of Christmas preparations in Germany are the Christmas Markets. In big cities, they welcome all those craving hot sausages and mulled wine for an entire month.
The Germans really know how to celebrate this season. In many places, the holiday spirit begins as early as October, when the streets are decorated with Christmas ornaments. Shop windows turn colorful, and Christmas-themed clothes – from sweaters and socks to hats and even festive underwear – fill the stores.
In my small village, the streets have long been decorated and are full of lights! Unfortunately, the Christmas Market was only for one weekend, but it was wonderful. Bratwurst – top class! There was even a nativity scene with two live goats!
At the beginning of the month, I learned from my teenagers that on December 6th Saint Nicholas brings candies and chocolates with alcohol inside, but you have to bake cookies for him. Well, I baked! I baked the whole day! Unfortunately, Saint Nicholas didn’t bring any chocolates with alcohol, but there were candies. Lots of joy and laughter while opening the little packages!
And finally, I have to boast that I’m still fighting with the rats. It’s a battle of life and death! From time to time something gets caught in the traps, but a few days ago I saw a mouse. That could mean the rats are already gone. I just hope it’s not the calm before the storm.
