Winter is coming to an end. At least, I really hope so! With the first warmer days comes that irresistible feeling of excitement – a brand-new gardening season is just around the corner!
In my garden, new beds and planters have appeared, but of course, I ran out of soil. I’m planning to buy about 600 litres of soil and 300 litres of compost to have everything ready for spring planting.
March is the month that opens the gardening season, even if the weather still isn’t that great. In the cooler temperatures, you can already sow carrots and parsley, and in the greenhouse, iceberg lettuce has much better growing conditions. For me, that’s the sign – time to roll up my sleeves and get to work!
It’s not only plants that need attention during winter. I’ve been taking care of my earthworms all along – under every bed I bury vegetable peelings and cardboard, creating the perfect conditions for them to work. I hope my efforts will pay off once planting time comes. Healthy, fertile soil is supposed to be the foundation of gardening success! At least that’s what I’ve read.
Life in the winter garden doesn’t stop. I regularly feed the birds, and they’ve become regular visitors. Blackbirds, great tits, robins, and wood pigeons come every day. A few times I even spotted a wren, though it’s much shyer and doesn’t visit often. From time to time, shrews also appear – small, helpful residents of the garden who are said to help fight pests by eating slug larvae and other unwanted guests.
So yes, my friends, there’s always something going on in the garden, even in winter! Now I’m just waiting for those first truly spring days when I can get back to work with full energy. Spring is around the corner, and I can’t wait!
